Located at the eastern end of the Wright Memorial Bridge, the town of Kitty Hawk is a gateway to the beautiful OBX beaches for all those entering the Outer Banks from the North through Currituck County mainland. It did not become a vacation destination in itself until about 70 years ago when the bridge connecting the Outer Banks and Currituck County was built.
Today, Kitty Hawk is a popular vacation reatreat offering a variety of recreational activities for people of all ages ? golf, fishing, kayaking and waterskiing, as well great shopping and fine dining.
With most of the businesses located on the Bypass (Highway 158) and the Beach Road (Highway 12), this OBX town can be quite busy, alive with activity all day long. But it also has a softer side, often unknown to those just driving through town ? within Kitty Hawk town limits there is a beautiful maritime forest and a secluded village where Wilbur and Orville Wright lived while conducting their flight experiments. Today, the village is primarily the locals˙ domain, with homes tucked away beneath the trees overlooking the canals and marshes and bringing one closer to nature. The community of Kitty Hawk Landing is one of the most popular year-round neighborhoods of the Outer Banks, attracting people relocating to the area and those who decide to retire in the OBX.
Home to more than 3,000 year-round residents, Kitty Hawk offers convenient shopping and good medical facilities, as well as Kitty Hawk Elementary School.
