Corolla and the northern beaches of the Outer Banks remained virtually untouched until the 1980s when the state road (Highway 12) was opened connecting the tiny village of Corolla on the west side of the island with the Dare County Outer Banks. The development flourished and no other Outer Banks community has changed so much in the past decade or two. Today, Corolla, whose year-round population is only about 500, is a premier vacation destination, with vast sandy beaches, upscale shopping and dining, a variety of recreational opportunities (kayak tours, Jet Ski rentals, surfing lessons, fishing charters, wild horse-finding trips, go-carts, a links-style golf course and tennis courts) and lavish vacation homes. The Insiderÿs Guide to North Carolinaÿs Outer Banks reported that ´the average Corolla house sleeps 16 to 20 people, includes more than 4,200 square feet of living space, has a pool and hot tub, and is available for weekly rentals¡. Ocean Hill, Corolla Light, Monteray Shores, Whalehead Beach, Currituck Club, Buck Island, Crown Point, Ocean Sands and Pine Island are some of the most luxurious communities in the Outer Banks, offering a wide array of amenities: exercise facilities, tennis courts, golf clubs, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, community sound and ocean access and parking, and even trolley transportation to and from the beach! It is a world of luxuries? and gorgeous sunsets? and long strolls along the beach?
